Founded 1865 in Hong Kong by Scottish merchant Thomas Sutherland to finance the China-Europe trade. Full Chinese name 汇丰银行 means 'abundant remittance bank' — 汇 (remit) + 丰 (abundant). Headquartered in London since 1993 but its Asia roots remain in the name.
