In Chinese martial arts the staff (棍) is called 百兵之祖 ('ancestor of the hundred weapons'). Shaolin 棍术 is historically linked to the legend of monks rescuing a Tang emperor. Modern wushu competitions include 棍术 as one of the four standard weapons alongside 刀 (saber), 剑 (sword), and 枪 (spear).
