Born in Chizhou (now Anhui), Du Xunhe lived through the disastrous final decades of the Tang dynasty and is best remembered for poems documenting the misery of peasants and the chaos of war - his most-anthologized poem 《山中寡妇》 'Mountain Widow' depicts a war widow forced to flee tax collectors deep into the hills.
