Tips

mistakes
In the name, 曾 is Zēng and 参 is shēn; reading them as céng and cān, as in 曾经 and 参加, is a classic slip. He is far better known as 曾子, 'Master Zeng'.
history
In the 《战国策》 story, another man named 曾参 killed someone. His mother went on weaving at the first report and at the second, but at the third she dropped her shuttle and fled over the wall: rumour repeated often enough shakes even a mother's trust. The Zhuangzi shows him so poor that pulling his collar straight left his elbows bare, the source of 捉襟见肘.
