乔治·卢卡斯's first film came out in 1977, and the saga has grown into prequels, sequels, cartoons and TV series. Fans shorten the title to 星战; Taiwan calls it 星际大战.

Its terms have standard Chinese names: the Force is 原力 and a lightsaber is a 光剑. In the 1980s the US missile-defence plan was nicknamed the 星球大战计划 'Star Wars programme' after it.
