usage
文稿 covers any written draft — a speech, an article, a book chapter — before it is finalized. For a polished published piece use 文章 (wénzhāng); for the typed input file in a computer, 文档 (wéndàng).

文 (text) + 稿 (draft / manuscript). The character 稿 originally meant 'rice straw', then 'unfinished, raw' — a 'raw text' is a draft.
