Don't confuse with 疟蚊 (Anopheles, the malaria mosquito). 摇蚊 (chironomids) are non-biting midges — they look mosquito-like but lack piercing mouthparts and don't transmit disease. Their blood-red 'bloodworm' larvae (赤虫) are sold as fish food.
