history

接驾 originally meant 'to receive the imperial carriage' — 驾 refers to the emperor's chariot and by extension the emperor himself (same character as in 驾崩, 'the emperor has died'). Ride-hail apps like 滴滴 cleverly recycled this deferential term for the pickup phase, casting every passenger as an honored guest.
