Because he wrote Rain Alley, Dai Wangshu was called "the poet of the rainy lane".
Tips
culture
In 《雨巷》 (1928) the poet walks alone with an oil-paper umbrella down a long, empty lane in the rain, hoping to meet a girl like a 丁香 (lilac), knotted with sorrow. Its music made him famous, and it is still read in Chinese schools.
memory
望舒 is the charioteer of the moon in 《离骚》, so his name carries a hint of moonlight. He also translated Lorca and Baudelaire into Chinese.
