Qing emperors famously used 御批 to comment on memorials in red ink — the practice was called (zhūpī, vermilion rescript). The Yongzheng Emperor's voluminous handwritten on official memorials survive today and offer one of the most candid windows into how an emperor actually ran the empire day-to-day.
