Older/Taiwan/Hong Kong usage. Mainland China standardized on
幼儿园 (yòu'éryuán) since the 1950s, but
幼稚园 still appears in Taiwan media, older Mainland writing, and as a Japanese loanword (
幼稚園, yōchien). The Japanese term itself is the original —
幼稚园 was borrowed into Chinese from Meiji-era Japanese in the late 1800s.
