Tips

history
韩愈 served on the staff of the chancellor 裴度 in the campaign of 817, which ended when the general 李愬 took the rebel city of 蔡州 in a snowstorm and captured 吴元济. The text gave the chief credit to Pei Du; Li Su's family complained, and the emperor had the stone ground off and recut with a new text by 段文昌. 李商隐's poem 《韩碑》 defends the original.
culture
The idiom 休养生息 "to rest and recover" comes from its line praising earlier Tang emperors for letting the people recover after war.
