With 沈佺期 he gave Tang regulated verse, 律诗, its fixed form, and the two are named together as 沈宋. He courted the favourites of 武则天, was exiled after their fall, and was ordered to kill himself in 712.
culture
A tale says he wanted his nephew 刘希夷's line 年年岁岁花相似 for himself and had him killed when he would not give it up. It is probably untrue, but it shows how much the line was prized.
