孟姜 is a description, not a given name: 孟 marks the eldest child and 姜 was the ruling clan of Qi, so it means 'eldest Jiang daughter'. The legend grew from the widow of 杞梁, a Qi officer killed in 550 BC, centuries before the Qin wall.
