孙膑, said to be a descendant of
孙武, served the state of
齐 in the 4th century BC. His name comes from the punishment
膑, removal of the kneecaps, which his jealous fellow student
庞涓 had inflicted on him; Sun Bin later beat him at the battles of Guiling and Maling. The book is listed in the Han imperial catalogue but was lost soon after.
