Tips

culture
Traditional marriages were arranged by the parents through a go-between, and a 媒婆 earned a fee carrying offers between the families. Opera and fiction made her a stock comic figure: a chatty old woman with a fan and a big mole by her mouth, usually played by the 彩旦 (comic female role).
usage
媒人 is the neutral word for any matchmaker. 媒婆 is the old-fashioned woman's role and now sounds jokey: an aunt who keeps setting you up gets called one.
