The range splits Xinjiang into 北疆 in the north, grassland and lakes, and 南疆 in the south, desert and oases. Li Bai's line 明月出天山 'the bright moon rises over the Tian Shan' made it a symbol of the far west.
usage
Its lake 天池 'Heaven Lake', east of Urumqi, is a famous sight. The crater lake on 长白山 has the same name.
