history

From Li Bai's 《上李邕》：大鹏一日同风起，扶摇直上九万里 - 'the great Peng rises one day with the wind, soaring straight up ninety thousand li.' It reworks the 《庄子·逍遥游》 image of the Peng bird mounting the whirlwind. The young Li Bai sent the poem to the official Li Yong, likening himself to the giant bird.

usage

鹏 is the giant bird transformed from the fish 鲲 in the 《庄子》. Today it often describes a talent or a company rising on momentum. The next line 扶摇直上九万里 has also become a set phrase.
