In a Buddhist temple, the
大殿 is usually the
大雄宝殿 (Dàxióng Bǎodiàn), housing the main Buddha statues. In imperial palaces it refers to the principal audience hall (e.g.
太和殿 in the Forbidden City). The character
殿 is reserved for sacred or imperial buildings — using it for an ordinary house would sound absurd.
