history

Founded June 1902 in Tianjin by 英敛之 (Ying Lianzhi), a Manchu Catholic. Through the 1930s it was the most respected liberal Chinese newspaper, edited by 张季鸾 (Zhang Jiluan) and 胡政之 (Hu Zhengzhi). The Tianjin edition closed in 1949; the Hong Kong edition still publishes today as a pro-Beijing daily.

The name 大公 (great impartiality) signals its editorial creed: 不党、不卖、不私、不盲 — 'no party, no sale, no self-interest, no blindness' — penned by Zhang Jiluan in 1926.
