Founded June 1902 in Tianjin by
英敛之 (Ying Lianzhi), a Manchu Catholic. Through the 1930s it was the most respected liberal Chinese newspaper, edited by
张季鸾 (Zhang Jiluan) and
胡政之 (Hu Zhengzhi). The Tianjin edition closed in 1949; the Hong Kong edition still publishes today as a pro-Beijing daily.
