Founded June 1902 in Tianjin by (Ying Lianzhi), a Manchu Catholic. Through the 1930s it was the most respected liberal Chinese newspaper, edited by (Zhang Jiluan) and (Hu Zhengzhi). The Tianjin edition closed in 1949; the Hong Kong edition still publishes today as a pro-Beijing daily.
