The name
大丽花 is a phonetic loan:
大丽 (dà lì) approximates 'dahlia', and
花 'flower' is appended for clarity. The flower was named after the 18th-century Swedish botanist Anders Dahl. The dahlia is the national flower of Mexico, where the Aztecs cultivated it long before European contact.
