history
大坂 was the original Chinese character used for Osaka, Japan. The Japanese changed it to 大阪 during the Meiji era because 坂 can be decomposed into 士反 ('samurai rebellion'), which was considered inauspicious.
Earth radical on the left marks 坂 as a feature of terrain — a slope or hillside is a piece of earth tilted upward. Same radical groups 地, 坡, 城, all sitting on the same ground family.
Right side supplies the sound: fǎn → bǎn (initial shift, common between f- and b- in Old Chinese readings). 反's sense of 'turning back' also evokes the way a slope reverses level ground into incline.
