Named in 1987 from the 澄江化石地 (Chengjiang fossil site), a UNESCO World Heritage Lagerstätte in Yunnan Province dating to ~520 million years ago. 古虫 ('ancient worm') is the type genus of Vetulicolia, a still-disputed phylum-level group of early animals.
