Founded 1984 in Guangzhou under Southern Newspaper Media Group (南方报业传媒集团), 《南方周末》 was for two decades the boldest investigative paper on the mainland - its New Year editorials drew nationwide attention. The 2013 New Year incident (《南方周末》新年献词事件), in which censors rewrote the editorial, sparked rare public protests outside its offices.
