Formed in 2000 by merging 华中理工大学, 同济医科大学, 武汉城建学院 and 武汉科技职工大学. Known colloquially as 华科 or 华中大. Consistently ranks in China's top ten for engineering and medicine, and is a member of the 985/211/双一流 elite university programmes.

The short form 华科 (Huákē) is universal among students; the full 华中科技大学 is used on documents and signage. Don't confuse it with 华东科技 (in Shanghai area) or 华南理工 (in Guangzhou).
