All the 交通大学 (Shanghai, Xi'an, Beijing, Southwest, National Chiao Tung in Taiwan) share a single ancestor: 南洋公学, founded 1896 in Shanghai by 盛宣怀. Despite the name, 交通 here means "communications" in the broad Qing-era sense (transport + telegraphy + shipping), not today's narrow sense of traffic.
