Tips

history
An estimated 30–60 million bison roamed North America before 1800; by 1890, industrial-scale hunting (often explicitly aimed at starving Plains tribes) had reduced them to about 1,000 animals. Populations have since recovered to around 500,000, mostly on ranches, and the species was designated the national mammal of the United States in 2016.
