Tips

history
'Former' tells it apart from the Later Qin (后秦) that followed it in the north, and from the First Emperor's Qin (秦朝). Fu Jian's defeat by the Eastern Jin at the Fei River in 383 gave Chinese the idioms 风声鹤唳 and 草木皆兵, from the fleeing soldiers who took every sound for the enemy.
