Literally 'thorn-head' - someone you can't grab without getting pricked. Often expanded as 刺儿头 (with the Beijing -er suffix) in spoken northern Mandarin. Used affectionately for spirited, defiant kids and disparagingly for combative coworkers - context decides the tone.
