班

Left side — jade radical, the side-form of 玉. Originally 班 pictured two pieces of jade with a knife between them: the act of splitting a jade pair to distribute among officials. From 'distributing' came 'group, class, team, rank'. Same radical heads the 玉 family — 玲 tinkling jade, 珍 precious, 珠 pearl.

Middle component — the knife between the two jade halves. Together the three components form the original compound ideograph: a blade splitting a piece of jade in two, the founding image of dividing groups, classes, or ranks. The knife is what does the dividing work in the picture.

Right side — second jade half, mirroring the left. The duplication of 王 around a knife is the entire point of the character: two pieces of jade being separated, a tableau of formal redistribution. From this physical splitting came 'class, team, work shift, scheduled run' — every sense of grouped allocation.
