The U.S. has leased the site from Cuba since 1903. After 2002 the base became internationally notorious for the detention facility (关塔那摩拘留营) holding suspects from the so-called 'War on Terror' (反恐战争). The Chinese name is purely phonetic; 湾 means 'bay'.
