The
淮南子 was compiled at the court of
刘安, King of Huainan, around 139 BCE, and chapters 1 to 20 all end in
训 'teaching'. This one tells of the old man at the frontier whose lost horse came back with another, the source of
塞翁失马, and has the line on the sage being careful with small things behind
谨小慎微.
