Tips

culture
Each of the four Buddhist mountains belongs to a bodhisattva: 五台山 to Manjushri, 峨眉山 to Samantabhadra, 普陀山 to Guanyin and 九华山 to Ksitigarbha (地藏). The Silla monk Kim Gyo-gak, who meditated here in the Tang dynasty, is revered on the mountain as Ksitigarbha himself.
history
It was once called 九子山 'Nine Sons Mountain'. Tradition credits 李白 with the new name: he compared its nine peaks to lotus flowers, and 华 here means 'flower'.
