Tips

history
The surname 丰臣 did not exist before him: the imperial court created it for 羽柴秀吉 (Hashiba Hideyoshi) in 1586. With 织田信长 (Oda Nobunaga) and 德川家康 (Tokugawa Ieyasu) he is one of Japan's 'Three Unifiers'.
usage
Japanese names written in kanji are not transliterated: Chinese simply reads the characters in Mandarin, so 豊臣 (Toyotomi) becomes 丰臣, just as Takeda is 武田 and Tanaka is 田中.
