It is made up of three plains: the 三江平原 in the northeast, the 松嫩平原 in the middle and the 辽河平原 in the south. With the 华北平原 and the Middle-Lower Yangtze Plain it is one of China's three great plains.
history
Much of its north was wild land until the 1950s, when the 北大荒 "Great Northern Wilderness" was turned into farms. Today it is one of China's main grain regions.
