四合院 (sìhéyuàn, 'courtyard residence'),
上房 is the north-facing principal building reserved for the senior generation — also called
正房 (zhèngfáng). Side rooms (
厢房 xiāngfáng) are for younger generations or guests. The hierarchy of rooms maps directly onto the family hierarchy.
