Traditional Chinese medicine holds that the seven openings of the head are linked to the five internal organs.
Tips
usage
七窍 lives on mostly in set phrases: 七窍生烟 (so angry that smoke pours from every opening), 七窍流血 (bleeding from every opening, of a violent death) and 一窍不通 (not one opening clear: knowing nothing about a subject).
culture
An old belief gave a wise person's heart seven openings too (心有七窍), which is why 一窍不通 means complete ignorance.
