history

Before 1875, the Taiwanese port city Keelung 基隆 was officially written 鸡笼 — the indigenous Ketagalan name was rendered into Chinese as 'chicken coop'. Qing administrator Shen Baozhen 沈葆桢 changed it to the homophonous 基隆 ('foundation of prosperity') because the original sounded undignified.
