Traditional 镏金 (also written 鎏金) involves dissolving gold in mercury, painting the amalgam onto bronze, then heating to drive off the mercury, leaving a thin gold layer fused to the surface. Used widely in Tang and Ming dynasty Buddhist sculpture and ritual vessels.
