Heavy water (D₂O) replaces normal hydrogen with deuterium, the isotope with an extra neutron — making each molecule literally heavier. In WWII, sabotaging Nazi Germany's heavy-water plant at Vemork in Norway (the Norwegian heavy water sabotage) was a key Allied operation that crippled their atomic-bomb program.
