From 襄陵 in today's Shanxi, he served as a minor clerk in Hangzhou and died there. Eighteen plays are credited to him and eight survive. 倩女离魂 retells the Tang tale 离魂记, in which a girl's soul leaves her sick body to follow the scholar she loves.
