Named after the 辛亥 year in the sexagenary cycle (1911). Triggered by the Wuchang Uprising on October 10, 1911, it led to the abdication of the last Qing emperor Puyi in February 1912 and the founding of the Republic of China under Sun Yat-sen.

October 10 (双十节, Double Tenth) is still celebrated as National Day in Taiwan in commemoration of the uprising.
