Loanword from Sanskrit pattra ('leaf'). Before paper, the long, thick leaves of this palm were dried, cut into strips, and used as writing material across South and Southeast Asia. 贝多叶经 - pattra-leaf sutras - are still preserved in temples in Yunnan and Tibet.
