Loanword from Sanskrit pattra ("leaf"). Before paper, the long, thick leaves of this palm were dried, cut into strips, and used as writing material across South and Southeast Asia.
贝多叶经 (bèiduō yè jīng) — pattra-leaf sutras — are still preserved in temples in Yunnan and Tibet.
