The name is a semantic translation of the Latin Torvosaurus ('savage lizard'): 虐 'cruel; savage' + 龙 'dinosaur'. Not to be confused with 暴龙 (Tyrannosaurus) or 霸王龙 — 虐龙 is a distinct, older genus from the Jurassic, not the Cretaceous.
