A collective UNESCO World Heritage listing (1997, expanded 2000) covering nine surviving private scholar-gardens in Suzhou. The style - borrowed scenery, winding paths, pavilions over water, artificial rockeries - defined the literati garden aesthetic from the Song through the Qing dynasties.
