The Chinese name is descriptive: 羊 (sheep) + 瘙痒 (itching) + 症 (disease) — 'sheep itching disease.' Infected sheep scrape themselves bald against fences, which is exactly how the English name 'scrapie' was coined.
history
Scrapie is the original prion disease, recognized in British sheep since the 1700s. It's the same family as BSE (mad cow) and CJD in humans — all caused by misfolded proteins, no DNA or RNA involved.
