博美 is short for 博美拉尼亚 (Pomerania), the Baltic region the breed was named after. Queen Victoria's small Pomeranian 'Marco' set the fashion for miniature 博美犬 after the 1888 Florence show — before that the breed averaged 10-15 kg.
