糖画 originated in Sichuan during the Ming dynasty and traditionally used zodiac animals spun by a roulette wheel — whichever animal the pointer stopped on was what the artist drew for the child. It was listed as a national intangible cultural heritage in 2008 and survives today mostly at tourist streets and temple fairs.
