From 1955 city dwellers received a monthly grain ration in coupons, needed to buy rice, flour, noodles, even a bun at a restaurant.
全国粮票 were good anywhere, while local ones worked only in their own province or city, so travelers had to swap. The coupons were phased out as markets opened and were gone by 1993.
